Abstract:
Business management as a field stands at a critical turning point. AI and advanced digital technologies are rapidly transforming work, leadership, and organizational capability. However, management research and teaching often lag behind these structural shifts. The field must now move beyond publication-driven excellence toward research that shapes policy, practice, and societal outcomes.
Drawing on evidence from three major EU-funded research programs: LEADSx2030, TechConnect, and WOTAM, this talk provides a European perspective on the future of HRM. Europe faces an estimated shortage of 20 million advanced digital professionals by 2030. However, the data from industry landscape survey reveals a critical imbalance: while investment in digital skills accelerates, human capabilities such as judgement, collaboration, ethical reasoning, and leadership remain underdeveloped.
The session argues for integrated Human and Tech (e.g. AI) capability development, where digital expertise and human strengths reinforce rather than replace one another. Using the Trinity AI XR Hub as a case example, the talk illustrates how immersive, practice-based education can bridge research, teaching, and industry, ensuring that AI-driven productivity gains translate into sustainable talent development and meaningful work.
Management research’s relevance in the AI era will depend not on its ability to observe change, but on its leadership in designing work, capability, and institutions fit for a digital society.
Speaker bio:
Professor Na Fu is Chair of Responsible Leadership and Fellow at Trinity College Dublin. She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Co-Director of the Trinity Centre for Digital Business and Analytics, Founder and Director for the Trinity AI XR Hub.
Professor Na Fu’s research lies at the cutting edge of digitalization, responsible AI, and human resource management. Her research leadership is evidenced by securing over €11 million in competitive research funding and leading multiple EU-funded projects, including LEADSx2030, TechConnect, and WOTAM, focusing on the digitalization of work and skills. Her work has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Management, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal, Human Relations, Journal of Business Ethics, and the International Journal of Human Resource Management.
Professor Fu has established and leads a global academic-industry network across Europe, the United States, Australia, Asia, and the United Arab Emirates, contributing strategically to academic policy dialogue and interdisciplinary research leadership at European and international levels.
